Last Friday, the Indian documentary proved that it was alive and thriving. In a quiet break with tradition, the open-air environs of the celebrated Horniman Circle Gardens formed an unconventional venue for the IDPA Awards for Excellence 2006.

Fifty years ago, the inaugural dinner of the Indian Documentary Producers’ Association was a quiet black tie affair at the Princess Room of the Taj Mahal Hotel. Half a century later, the IDPA Awards for Excellence 2006 is only one of several commemorative special occasions planned for the year.

In a clear indication of the appeal of the documentary and short film formats, younger filmmakers, including first-timers, won most awards.

The prestigious documentary gold went to a delightful film shot by a one-man film unit in the mountains near the Chinese border. Alone on a trusted motorcycle, Gaurav Jani braved loneliness and oxygen deprivation, traversing hundreds of miles on a odyssey across India, into the Himalayas at  Manali and up to Ladakh, to film Riding Solo to the Top of the World.A unique experiment in film, this adventure was made possible because of advances in digital technology.

A close contender for the top spot was Shyamal Karmarkar’s I am the Very Beautiful, the often startling and vivid account of an unconventional life.Other documentary awards went to Naina Jogin, Praveen Kumar’s film on Madhubani painters and their art.

The Short Fiction Gold was awarded to what the jury termed ‘ a simple jewel of a film’  -- Arwa Mamaji’s 5 min lyrical rendition of a simple story titled I Became… while Sanghamitra Karmarkar’s Baba Black Beard brought her the Gold for first time Director.

Advertising and corporate film awards were won by Shivendra Singh and Bharatbala, both established names in the genre. The Corporate Communication Gold was awarded to Rajat Nagpal for Tulsi Chanrai Foundation.

Competition was stiff in the innovative field of animation. Gold went to Gitanjali Rao’s Painted Rainbow, a magical exploration of ‘naive art’. Other winners were Vaibhav Kumaresh for the Amaron III commercial in digitally simulated clay-animation and E. Suresh for Slim Vs Slim, an entertaining film using the stick figure.

The IDPA Awards 2006 also conferred technical awards in the Cinematography, Sound Design, Film Editing and Scriptwriting. The Student Film category attracted a large number of entries in the documentary, animation and short fiction sections.

Here is a complete list of the IDPA Awards for Excellence winners with the jury citations and their contact details.
