IDPA UPDATE, the newsletter of the Indian Documentary Producers’ Association comes to you as an occasional publication. This is part of our effort to keep you updated about developments in the world of the short film that may be of interest to film makers. This issue contains a list of upcoming film festivals compiled from various sources.

CNBC online is looking for your short film

If you are a filmmaker, experimental, amateur, student, pro, and have made a short film of not more than 10 minutes, fiction, documentary, animation, using a mobile phone, CNBC online is the place to send your film. With their new, upcoming entertainment portal, they have plans to support the short film genre in a big way. They tell us that cross promotion on their various networks, a viewers’ voting space, proposed competitions and other features will be part of their development plan.

Call for Entries, IDFA 2007

The 20th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, the largest festival for creative documentaries in the world, will take place in Amsterdam from 22 November to 2 December 2007. Each year, IDFA selects and screens more than 250 documentaries, running the gamut from international audience favourites to artistic experiments along the fringes of the genre.

We would like to welcome you to submit your films for IDFA 2007. There are no fees involved, not even if your film gets selected, but please keep our deadlines in mind: the first one coming up is 1 May.
We're looking forward to another great documentary harvest.

Submit with MyIDFA
In order to submit a film, you need a MyIDFA account. This will allow you to submit films and projects to IDFA as well as to the Docs for Sale and FORUM markets. You can register for a MyIDFA account on our website.

Regulations
In addition to the Joris Ivens Competition (documentaries longer than 60 minutes), the Silver Wolf Competition (30-60 minutes), the Silver Cub Competition (shorter than 30 minutes), and the First Appearance Competition (for debuting directors), the festival includes many other programmes. For more information about the selection criteria, please go to our website and look under Regulations 2007. Please note that the selection criteria for the competition programmes have changed this year.

Prabhat Film Festival
Pune, 7th to 12th May, 2007

Film and Television Institute of India is organising its Prabhat Film Festivalonce more. The festival will showcase works of student filmmakers across Asia. There will also be seminars and discussions on films by eminent theoreticians and film historians.

Apart from student film makers, professionals will also get a place here. The Festival Committee will make a space called Cine-shop available to film makers to promote, distribute and retail their films. The Cine-shop will have open air night screenings of selected films.

You have to arrange for your own travel and accommodation but the Festival Committee will guide and facilitate you to find accommodation. There are no registration charges, but each filmmaker is requested to donate two copies of his/her film to the video library of the FTII.

Come with lots of DVD copies of your films and get your fellow filmmakers along.

Make your travel plans for Kerala: ViBGYOR International Film Festival 2007

Celebrating Identities and Diversity
Thrissur, Kerala May 10-13

ViBGYOR Film Festival celebrates the vagaries of identity and the richness of its embodied diversity in the festival of short and documentary films held every year in Thrissur, Kerala. They invite filmmakers, activists and film lovers from every corner of the world to participate in this celebration of ideas, art, struggles and dreams.

The Second Edition of ViBGYOR will be held from 10th to 13th of May 2007. The four-day film festival invests not just in the banquet of films of value and sense but strive to make the event a rich visual and intellectual experience in interfacing with filmmakers, activists, peoples' movement leaders and academicians from as divergent streams of life and activities. The marked difference from the last year is the absence of a competition section. Instead, we are introducing the 'Festival to the People', creating an additional venue in a rural area near Thrissur town, where screenings and interactions with the filmmakers will be interspersed.

The ViBGYOR Package will have seven themes: Earth will be the theme for the Focus of the Year 2007. The festival will start with a national conference on the same theme. Additionally there will be Indigenous People, Dalit Reality, Gender & Sexuality, Fundamentalism v/s Diversity, Nation State, Globalization and Country/Region focus and seven films will be screened in each theme.

Apart from these, will be Short Fiction, Music Videos, Animations and Spots, Retrospectives and a Kerala Spectrum. The other features include Open Forum every day and a film market.

ViBGYOR-2007 is organized by Chetana Media Institute (Thrissur) along with Nottam (Cochin) GAIA (Thrissur), Abhivyakti (Nasik), Visual search (Bangalore) and Marupakkam (Madurai), with the support of Governmental and Non-Governmental institutions.

Moondance International Film Festival 2007

The Moondance International Film Festival, popularly known as the "American Cannes", is one of the premier venues for the exhibition and promotion of independent feature and short films in the US. Their tagline the movie is only the beginning! reflects theFestival's goal of presenting films and scripts which have the power to raise awareness about vital social issues, educating writers and filmmakers, as well as film festival audiences, and inspiring them to take positive action. They believe that through meaningful films, we begin to realise that our routine perspectives can give way to new ways of seeing the world, ourselves and others.
