ABOUT THE GOLDEN GATE AWARDS COMPETITION
Festival programmers put together roughly three-quarters of our programs, including all of the theatrical narrative features. For the remaining quarter we turn to the Bay Area's active, savvy, dedicated professional media community, who, through the Golden Gate Awards™ competition, determine the year's best documentaries, shorts, animation, experimental film and video and television. The GGA quite simply is one of the most unique, respected and popular competitions in the world-and the most international.

Fourth IAWRT Asian Women’s Film Festival 2008, India

The International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) is a non–profit professional organisation of women working in electronic and allied media. The IAWRT is a non-government organisation (NGO), in consultative status with United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). IAWRT collaborates with media organisations and organises conferences, projects and activities.
The IAWRT in partnership with IIC Asia Project is organising the Fourth Asian Women’s Film Festival in March 2008. The aim of the festival is to open up a space for debates on creative processes and concerns.

The 2008 festival is titled, “Insights and Aspirations”.  It will be a two-day event, to mark the International Women’s Day (March 7th to 8th 2008). We take this opportunity to invite you (and/or your friends) to send your film by 26th Dec. 2007.

Recognising the critical need for a forum that can sustain the form of documentary as well as women’s contribution to this unique form, the festival will showcase documentary films created by women, covering a range of genres and expressive styles. It will present films that explore and reflect on how women filmmakers negotiate, resist or document political, social, cultural, environmental, educational or economic issues.

Are they creating a new language of filmmaking, which reflects, explores a news aesthetic and politics of filmmaking? How are women widening the frame for issues concerning women? These will be some of the central questions in the festival coupled with panel discussions and/or a seminar.
IIC Asia-project and IAWRT will use this forum to curate a special session dedicated to short films across genres of animation, fiction and documentary film.
The IAWRT/IIC Asian Women’s Festival has traveled to many cities in India .The last festival had screenings in Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Pune and Madurai.

The Centre for Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences announces a new Masters programme in Media and Cultural Studies from. June 2008. The application deadline is November 10, 2007. Admission Test in 17 centres all over India. More details at http://tiss.edu/querya.htm and at http://www.tiss.edu/cmcs/ma.html

A Note on the Programme

The M.A. in Media and Cultural Studies aims at honing skills of media production and research within a framework that enables the development of a critical perspective on media, culture and society. In contemporary society, media and culture are crucial sites where identities are produced and popular ways of seeing are consumed. Cultural Studies enables us to meaningfully engage and interact with these new modes of being and doing. By making us conscious of the many complex ways in which power impinges on our lives and constructs our cultures, it has the potential of empowering us to critically read the media and other cultural institutions and texts, to understand how they shape our identities and to think about how we could possibly shape them.

This programme will impart intensive hands-on training in video production, including direction, research, scripting, editing, camera and sound. It also has a strong research focus. This will enable students to produce documentaries and short films.  The programme will culminate in the production of a documentary/ multi media artifact and a research term paper. It will also teach basic skills in community radio, graphics and web design. The students will have access to the well-equipped facilities and the visual archive of the Centre for Media and Cultural Studies (www.tiss.edu/cmcs). The teachers of the course would include CMCS and TISS faculty as well as professionals.

With its unique blend of theory and practice, the M.A. in Media and Cultural Studies works towards the creation of a lively group of media 'thinking do-ers' and 'doing thinkers' who could then choose to branch out into a diverse range of work or educational situations. The students of this course will be equipped to work in the areas of media and television production, independent media practice, media education, advocacy and research.  The potential employers include NGOs, television production houses, educational and research institutions and governmental agencies.
